August Wilson House
Pittsburgh, PA
The August Wilson House is a nonprofit cultural institution in Pittsburgh's historic Hill District, centered on the restored childhood home of Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright August Wilson (1945-2005). Located at 1727 Bedford Avenue, the modest house is where Wilson spent his first thirteen years living with his mother, Daisy Wilson, and five siblings. The neighborhood and the everyday lives of its residents became the wellspring for his American Century Cycle, a ten-play series chronicling African-American life across each decade of the 20th century. After years of community effort and restoration, the house reopened in August 2022 as an arts center. Rather than functioning as a static museum, it is designed to stay useful and active, hosting theatrical productions, community programming, artist fellowships, and educational initiatives. Guided house tours include Daisy Wilson's Apartment, the restored two-room home that offers a rare glimpse into the world that shaped Wilson's artistry. The restoration paired the preserved historic structure with a modern, glass-fronted addition. Today the August Wilson House celebrates Wilson's literary legacy while serving as a space for learning, creativity, and community empowerment rooted in the Hill District's cultural heritage.
