Retail & Shops in New York City

Independent retail in New York runs along the neighborhood corridors rather than the avenues tourists know: Malcolm X Boulevard and Frederick Douglass Boulevard uptown, Tompkins and Lewis Avenues in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Fulton Street, and the blocks around Broadway below Houston. Books, apparel, vintage, home goods, gifts, wine and apothecary make up most of it. A lot of the stock is in-store only, and several shops keep short hours early in the week.

Community & Nonprofit in New York City

Nonprofits and community organizations based in New York City, many of them working statewide or nationally from an office here. Services range from legal defense and family support to advocacy, organizing and direct assistance. Most publish who is eligible and how to reach intake on their own site, and email is usually faster than the main phone line.

Restaurants & Food in New York City

New York kitchens are a neighborhood matter, and the ones listed here sit mostly in Harlem and central Brooklyn. Senegalese, Haitian, Jamaican, West African, Southern and modern American cooking all show up, in dining rooms, counters, cafes and caterers. Reservations are worth making for the smaller rooms even midweek, and several of them run a heavy takeout trade that can make the dining room look emptier than the business is.

Bakeries in New York City

Bakeries, pastry counters and ice cream shops across Manhattan and Brooklyn, from French pastry made daily to Southern layer cakes sold by the slice. Some are storefronts with a line, others bake to order for pickup. Custom cakes normally want a week or more, and a few of these run classes in the same room they bake in.

Legal in New York City

Attorneys across the five boroughs handling family, estate, employment, immigration and small-business matters. Some practices take LGBTQ+ family work, including second-parent adoption and name and gender marker changes. New York City and New York State procedures differ enough that an initial consult is the cheapest way to find out whether a firm handles your specific situation regularly.

Travel & Hospitality in New York City

Tour operators and hospitality businesses working in New York, several of them built around the city's Black history and its neighborhoods rather than the standard sightseeing loop. Public tours book online; private, group and student bookings usually go through the operator directly. Ask how much of a walking tour is actually walking before you book for a group.

Bars & Nightlife in New York City

Bars and nightlife rooms across the boroughs, including beer bars, cocktail rooms and spots with a backyard, which is worth more in this city than the words suggest. Programming turns over constantly and a venue's own calendar is the only reliable source. Check closing times rather than assuming: they vary far more block to block here than the reputation implies.

Health & Wellness in New York City

Clinics, therapists, dentists and wellness practices around the city, including providers who name affirming care as part of their practice. Insurance participation varies between practices and sometimes between providers inside one, so confirm coverage before a first visit. Many therapists see clients anywhere in New York State by video.

Professional Services in New York City

Consultants, accountants, coaches and membership and coworking spaces serving New York businesses and the people who run them. Much of this is hybrid, so fit matters more than which borough an office sits in. For anything ongoing, ask how a firm prices a retainer against a single project.

Real Estate in New York City

Agents working the New York market, where co-op board approval, condo rules and rent-stabilized inventory each behave differently enough to be separate skills. Ask what an agent has closed recently in the specific borough and building type you are shopping, since experience in one does not carry to the others.
