Project Row Houses

Houston, TX

Publicly ListedBlack-owned · Publicly Listed

Project Row Houses began in 1993, when artist Rick Lowe and a group of fellow African American artists looked at a block and a half of derelict shotgun houses in Houston's Historic Third Ward and saw possibility. Rather than demolition, they chose restoration, turning the row houses into a living work of art and a home for community. More than thirty years later, the organization spans five city blocks and 39 structures in one of the city's oldest African American neighborhoods. We hold that art and the community it inspires can be a driving force for social transformation. Through rotating public art installations, artist residencies, exhibitions and programs that support young mothers, small businesses and neighborhood preservation, we keep the Third Ward's culture, history and people at the center of everything we do. Visitors are welcome to walk the grounds, experience the art houses and see how creativity and social justice grow side by side. Admission is always free, and our work remains rooted in the belief that neighborhoods, like art, are something we build together.
