Sylvia's Restaurant

New York, NY

Public sourceBlack-owned · Public source

Sylvia's opened on Malcolm X Boulevard in 1962 and has been a Harlem landmark for more than sixty years. Its founder, Sylvia Woods, was widely called the Queen of Soul Food.

The kitchen is unreconstructed and better for it: golden fried shrimp, barbecue short ribs, cornmeal-dusted tilapia, smothered chicken. Weekend brunch runs long.

The restaurant takes reservations and online orders, and the Woods family name still sits behind the scholarship foundation attached to it.
