Businesses to know
Enhanced members across the metro. Every category has its own section further down.
Los Angeles eats by neighborhood and the neighborhoods are a long way apart, so most people pick a corridor and stay in it. West Adams, Leimert Park and the Crenshaw District hold a dense run of kitchens along Jefferson, Degnan and Crenshaw Boulevard. Little Ethiopia is a compact stretch of South Fairfax, Little Tokyo and Koreatown sit either side of downtown, and Silver Lake and Los Feliz run north along Hyperion and Hillhurst. Parking is the thing to plan for rather than the distance, and several kitchens keep shorter hours on Mondays.
Los Angeles, CA · Inglewood, CA
Nightlife in Los Angeles clusters tightly. Santa Monica Boulevard through West Hollywood is the densest walkable stretch in the county and the one place you can leave a car parked and move between rooms on foot. Downtown and the Arts District run later and draw a different crowd, and Silver Lake and Echo Park keep the neighborhood bars. Rideshare is the norm rather than the exception, and cover charges are common on weekend nights.
Bakers here are spread across the basin rather than gathered in one district, from storefront counters in Burbank and Pasadena to pastry makers working out of shared kitchens and weekend markets. Morning is the honest answer for a bakery case in this city, because the good things go early and are rarely replaced the same day. Custom cakes normally want a week or more of notice, and more through the spring wedding season.
Los Angeles carries a long established network of community organizations, advocacy groups and service providers, several of them national bodies that happen to be headquartered here. Many run programs across the whole county from a single office, so the address is often a poor guide to who they serve. Check intake hours and eligibility on an organization's own page before traveling, because both change more often than a directory can track.

Shopping in Los Angeles splits between the walkable strips and the big centers. La Brea and Fairfax hold the independent clothing and design stores, Leimert Park keeps its own small commercial village around Degnan Boulevard, and Baldwin Hills Crenshaw anchors the shopping in that part of the city. Plenty of makers here sell mainly online and still keep a counter or take appointments locally, which is worth asking about before you drive over.

Salons and barbers in Los Angeles work by appointment and book out further than visitors expect, particularly in West Hollywood, Beverly Hills and along the Wilshire corridor. A stylist's own book matters more than the address here, so it is usual to follow a person between chairs. Ask about hair type and technique when you book rather than on the day, and expect a consultation before any color work.

Attorneys across the Los Angeles basin, from downtown firms near the civic center to solo practices in the valleys and on the Westside. Los Angeles County runs the largest court system in the country and its courthouses are scattered, so ask which one a matter would be heard in before choosing on address alone. Many practices offer a first consultation at no charge, and it is worth asking what is included in it.

Planners, florists, photographers and caterers working across the basin, where a single event regularly crosses several cities in one day. Venues in Los Angeles book a year or more ahead for the spring and fall dates, and permits are handled city by city rather than county wide. Ask early who is responsible for the permit and for parking, because those two answers shape everything else about the day.
Contractors, designers, cleaners and maintenance trades working across a county of very different housing stock, from prewar bungalows in the older neighborhoods to hillside builds that need their own engineering. Permitting runs through the city or the individual municipality rather than one office, so a contractor who has worked your area before will move faster. Ask for a license number and confirm it, which takes a minute and is the norm here.
Los Angeles has more design, branding and production work per square mile than almost anywhere, and most of it is done by small studios and independents rather than the names on the buildings. The Westside, Burbank and Pasadena hold clusters of them, though the work travels and plenty of studios never meet a client in person. Ask to see work in the format you actually need, because a reel and a brand system are different crafts.
Buying and selling in Los Angeles turns on the boundary between one neighborhood and the next, and those boundaries move faster than any map. Agents here generally work a handful of areas properly rather than the whole county, so the useful question is which streets someone has actually closed on. The city and several of its neighbors run their own transfer taxes and rules, which is worth raising early.
