Hammer & Stein is a family owned and operated handyman service working across Upstate South Carolina. Ely Stein is the owner and runs the work on site. Kacy Stein, his wife, is the chief operating officer, handles the scheduling and the paperwork behind every job, and has been known to put on gloves and help finish one when a deadline needs it. Their own account of why the business exists is that everyone deserves a safe, comfortable and well maintained home, and that this matters most for veterans, seniors, single parents and people on a fixed income who may not have access to affordable repair work. That is what the pricing is built around, alongside honest assessments and no upselling. If a job falls outside what they take on, they will point you to the right professional for it rather than attempt it. The house work covers repair and maintenance room by room: interior painting and touch ups, cabinet repairs and hardware replacement, shelving, minor flooring repairs in laminate, vinyl and tile, fence and gate repairs, deck and porch repairs, weatherproofing and caulking, screen repair and replacement, appliance installation and troubleshooting, faucet and fixture upgrades, and TV mounting and picture hanging. Plumbing and electrical are limited to minor repairs and the business says so plainly. That means leaky faucets and running toilets, sink and toilet replacements, garbage disposals, light fixtures, ceiling fans, switches, outlets and cover plates, and smoke detector installation. Major plumbing and electrical work is not taken on. A safety and accessibility line covers grab bar and handrail installation, step and ramp repairs, smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, and childproofing and safety locks. Outside, the work runs to gutter cleaning, pressure washing of driveways, sidewalks and siding, minor siding repairs, yard cleanup and debris removal, storm preparation and minor storm damage repair. Smaller limb removal and fallen tree cleanup are included, though full tree cutdowns are not. They also take away scrap: metals, electronics, appliances, cardboard, plastics, tires and batteries. Two lines sit alongside the house work. Ely spent years working in BMW production and handles minor vehicle services, from batteries, bulbs, wiper blades, filters, fluid checks and tire pressure through to brake and rotor replacement, window motor repair and door panel repair. There is also basic technology help, aimed particularly at seniors and anyone starting from scratch: computer and laptop setup, printers, Wi-Fi and routers, software installation and updates, email and password help, device cleanup, virus and malware scans, smart TV and streaming setup, syncing a phone or tablet, and hard drive wiping. It stops short of advanced IT work and data recovery. Work is arranged by phone, text or email, and anyone with an urgent job is asked to call rather than write. If nobody picks up, leave a message: the likeliest reason is that they are in the middle of somebody else's job.
