Black Austin Tours was created by Javier Wallace, a native Austinite whose family arrived in the area as enslaved African people when Texas was still part of Mexico. That history is not background for these tours. It is the through-line. Javier completed his PhD at the University of Texas at Austin, researching how race, class, gender and migration shape educational access, and he brings that lens to the streets, the buildings and the stories the standard city tour leaves out. Powerful stories, passionate guides, and an Austin most visitors never hear about.
