The Arc of Larimer County

The Arc of Larimer County promotes and protects the civil rights of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities through free advocacy, education and community support at every stage of life. Its Fort Collins office serves children, adults, parents, guardians and caregivers across Larimer County, including young people moving from school to adulthood and adults looking for employment, housing and greater independence.

Trained advocates work one-on-one at no cost, with the goals of the person with IDD guiding every step. They help people understand their rights, prepare for and attend school and IEP meetings, explore Medicaid waivers and benefits such as SSI and SSDI, plan for the short and long term, and coordinate with school districts, providers and county agencies. To get started, submit the online advocacy request form; a specialist follows up within five to seven business days to schedule an intake meeting. On the second and fourth Wednesday of each month, Ask a Disability Advocate hours from 12:30 to 3:00 pm welcome walk-ins with no appointment.

Education is a big part of the work. Parent Academy is a fall series that helps families of students ages 6 to 12 navigate evaluations, IEPs and 504 plans, and workshops cover guardianship and alternatives such as supported decision-making. The Arc also offers Disability Acceptance and Inclusion Training for businesses and organizations, a resource guide, recorded webinars and a podcast.

The Arc also works on policy, collaborating with lawmakers, other Arc chapters and agencies. Supporters can volunteer, become members or give to the Bonnie Lynn McKenzie Self Advocacy Leadership Development Fund.
