PFLAG Denver

PFLAG Denver works to create a caring, just and more affirming world for LGBTQIA+ people and those who love them across the Denver Metro area. The chapter dates to February 1980, when parents and family members of gay and lesbian people came together to organize. They answered thousands of letters, kept personal phone lines open around the clock for people in crisis, and for 13 years hosted a monthly HIV/AIDS support group. Today PFLAG Denver is an all-volunteer 501(c)(3), unaffiliated with any religious or political group.

Support follows PFLAG's tradition of meeting people where they are. SOFFA, a peer-led group for significant others, family, friends and allies, meets in person on the first Saturday of each month. It was first created for loved ones of transgender, nonbinary and gender nonconforming people and now welcomes anyone navigating a loved one's LGBTQIA+ journey. The chapter also connects people one-on-one with others who have walked a similar path, and keeps lists of community and crisis resources.

The Speakers Bureau brings customized talks, panels and consultations to businesses, schools and faith communities, covering LGBTQIA+ vocabulary, local data, allyship tools and action planning. The Memorial Scholarship Program awards up to $2,500 per recipient to LGBTQIA+ students and Active Allies, honoring chapter leaders such as Elinor and Tom Lewallen, and its annual Scholarship and Award Ceremony is the chapter's most anticipated night of the year. Outreach volunteers staff PFLAG tables at Pride festivals and resource fairs.
