Glenwood Springs, CO · Serving Eagle, Garfield, Lake, and Pitkin counties

Serves Individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families in Eagle, Garfield, Lake, and Pitkin countiesDisabilityRegistered nonprofit

The Arc of the Central Mountains advocates for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families throughout the rural mountain communities of Eagle, Garfield, Lake, and Pitkin counties. The organization promotes inclusion, civil rights, and equal opportunity in every aspect of community life, including public schools, employment settings, recreational activities, and independent living.

Individual advocacy forms the core of the chapter's day-to-day operations. Staff advocates work directly with parents and self-advocates to navigate complex public benefit systems, establish Special Education Individualized Education Programs, access Medicaid waivers, and plan transitions from high school to adulthood. Because rural families frequently face significant geographic barriers and limited local provider options, the chapter offers specialized guidance on local transportation, housing vouchers, and regional disability networks. Advocates attend school meetings alongside parents, review evaluation documents, and ensure that each child receives appropriate educational accommodations.

Community education and systemic policy efforts complement the direct casework. The organization collaborates with regional school districts, healthcare clinics, social service agencies, and employers to foster inclusive community practices and remove institutional barriers. Regular educational workshops provide families with practical tools on topics such as special needs trusts, guardianship alternatives, financial planning, and self-advocacy skills, empowering participants to secure essential support services across the Central Rockies.
