Jax River City Pride

Jax River City Pride is the all-volunteer nonprofit that produces Jacksonville's Pride celebration each October. Its mission is to foster a thriving, inclusive and equitable community for LGBTQIA+ people and allies in Jacksonville and beyond, and it pursues that mission through celebration, education, advocacy and outreach. Everyone is welcome, and the organization's policy is to offer equal opportunity and support regardless of race, religion, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, age or disability.

The story of Pride in Jacksonville begins in 1978, when the city held its first Gay Pride picnic at Willow Branch Park. In the decades that followed, a succession of community organizations carried the celebration forward through the growth of local LGBTQ+ organizing, the grief of the AIDS epidemic and several changes of name and venue. After the last of those organizations disbanded in 2009 and Pride activities were canceled, Jerry Rosenberg rallied a group of volunteers in 2010 to start again with no funds. The new River City Pride brought back the parade and festival that October, timed with National Coming Out Day, and in 2017 the organization began operating under its own 501(c)(3) status.

The Jax River City Pride Parade is the heart of Pride weekend. The 1.5-mile route kicks off at Historic Willow Branch Park, the site of that first picnic, and travels through the Riverside, Avondale and Five Points neighborhoods before finishing at Riverside Park. Thousands line the route to cheer floats and walking groups from businesses, nonprofits, bars, sports teams, marching bands and churches. Groups register ahead of time, and an information tent at the Willow Branch Library helps participants check in on parade day. In 2023, Donna Deegan, Jacksonville's first woman mayor, became the first sitting mayor to serve as grand marshal.

The Jax River City Pride Festival follows in Riverside Park near the Duck Pond in the historic Five Points district. The festival marketplace brings together local artists, small businesses, nonprofits and food trucks, with live entertainment throughout the day. The Family Fun Zone, also called the Kid Zone, offers story time, dance parties and bubbles so families of all kinds can celebrate together.

Pride does not end in October. Jax River City Pride keeps a community calendar of Jacksonville LGBTQIA+ events, from drag brunches to workshops, where anyone can submit a gathering. Its resources page points people to local and national support, including JASMYN, PFLAG Jacksonville, Jacksonville Florida Black Pride, the LGBTQ Community Fund of Northeast Florida, Trans Lifeline and the LGBT National Help Center. Fundraisers such as bingo nights and concerts, merchandise sales and concession shifts help keep Pride free to attend.

Volunteers power all of it. People can help sell merchandise, staff booths at community events, distribute flyers, work parade operations or take on festival roles. Supporters can also donate, register to march, book a vendor space or become a sponsor.
