Urban League of Greater Atlanta

The Urban League of Greater Atlanta exists to ensure that African Americans and others have the tools they need to secure economic stability, equity, social justice and civil rights. It is part of the National Urban League network, a group of historic civil rights organizations across the country that share a commitment to economic empowerment in historically underserved urban communities, and it works with partners to help each client reach a personal goal through education, homeownership, workforce development, entrepreneurship, civic engagement and more.

The work is organized under five pillars: human services, health and wellness; careers, talent development and workforce solutions; entrepreneurship and economic development; housing, financial empowerment and wealth building; and legislative policy, social justice and civic engagement. Services are offered across the city of Atlanta and Fulton, DeKalb, Cobb, Gwinnett, Clayton, Henry, Douglas, Fayette and Rockdale counties, with virtual options available.

Careers and workforce development are at the center of daily activity. Job seekers can get career and vocational evaluation, employment readiness counseling, resume development, job search coaching, interview practice, job referrals and access to job listings. Participants can be placed in job shadowing opportunities and internships, and post-employment career counseling and job performance coaching continue after a hire. Soft skills training covers communication, goal setting, decision making, time management, leadership and managing stress. Adult literacy and basic education, benefits counseling and case management round out the supportive services, and computer training is offered at two levels, including a 12-week Microsoft Office Specialist certification preparation program.

Youth and Young Adult Services support 14 to 24 year olds as they earn secondary and post-secondary credentials, build computer skills and develop technical occupational skills that lead to sustainable, living-wage work. The League also serves dislocated workers, unemployed people, low-income individuals and public housing residents.

The Financial Empowerment and Economic Resilience Center (FEERC) is a one-stop center that blends career services, case management and financial coaching, using a model developed with the Local Initiatives Support Corporation and the National Urban League. Through its emergency response component, the League has partnered with government jurisdictions to help families with rent, mortgage, utilities, food and other basic needs while they pursue employment and certification in higher-wage fields.

Beyond direct service, the League speaks up and brings people together. Its inaugural State of Black Georgia report, released in 2023, looks at education, economics, health, social justice and civic engagement, and its Equal Opportunity Day dinner, gala and celebration honors champions of its mission each fall. The League has also supported Black-owned small businesses and takes part in community career and resource fairs with regional partners.
