Equality Illinois

Equality Illinois is the statewide advocacy organization for LGBTQ+ Illinoisans, working from Chicago since 1991. It brings the voices of LGBTQ+ people and allies to the institutions that make decisions, with a focus on policy, people and power.

On policy, Equality Illinois defends civil rights wins and advances new protections in education, health care and criminal justice. Its 2026 agenda includes bills on gender marker changes on driver's licenses, 12-month supplies of hormone therapy and a ban on funding for conversion practices. It also helped release the Illinois Guide for Survivors of Conversion Practices, which explains reporting steps, rights and options for civil action.

On people, the LGBTQ+ Boards and Commissions Project links qualified LGBTQ+ Illinoisans to openings on key state panels. On power, the Statewide Network offers small grants, training and capacity-building support to local LGBTQ+ groups in places like southern Illinois, Bloomington-Normal, Peoria and Naperville. A central intake form helps families seek advocacy support when a student faces anti-LGBTQ+ behavior at school.

Anyone can turn to the LGBTQ+ Illinois Resource List, published in English and Spanish, for legal help, youth services and more. Supporters can volunteer, sign up for email updates, join the Capitol Club donor group, or celebrate at the annual Pride Kick-off Brunch and the Gala at the Hilton Chicago. Businesses can join the Illinois Equality Council.
