UPS for Downs
Schaumburg, IL · Serving Schaumburg and the greater northwest Chicago suburban area
United Parent Support for Down Syndrome, known as UPS for Downs, is a parent-directed organization providing encouragement, educational resources, and social opportunities across the northwest Chicago suburbs. Founded in 2004, the organization champions community acceptance by sharing the potential, creativity, and accomplishments of individuals with Down syndrome through all stages of life.
Family support programs provide vital guidance from early diagnosis through adulthood. New and expectant parents connect with experienced mentor families who offer compassionate perspective, hospital visits, and comprehensive informational packages. Sibshops offer dedicated peer support workshops for brothers and sisters of individuals with developmental disabilities. Educational seminars and parent nights out create welcoming forums where caregivers discuss school accommodations, therapy approaches, medical updates, and transition planning.
Social and creative enrichment flourishes through age-based clubs and community programs. The organization coordinates social groups for children, teens, and adults, alongside a community walking club and Next Chapter Book Clubs. The UPS for Downs Theatre Company stages full-scale annual musical productions featuring cast members with and without Down syndrome, creating inclusive performance opportunities for regional actors.
Athletic participation and literacy initiatives further enrich the community. The charity endurance team trains athletes to complete marathons and half-marathons while raising funds and awareness for inclusive community initiatives. Meanwhile, the Katie MacDonald Literacy Project distributes specialized learning materials, books, and educational grants to local schools and community partners.
