Lesbians of Iowa

Lesbians of Iowa (LOIA) is a community nonprofit that fosters connection, visibility and belonging for queer adults of marginalized genders across the state. It welcomes members 18 and older who are lesbians, trans, nonbinary and gender variant, and brings them together through retreats, social events, educational opportunities and collaborative gatherings. LOIA began in February 2017 and keeps its online community going through a public Facebook page, a private Facebook group and a private Discord server.

The signature events are LOIA camps at an Iowa campground, held in spring, summer (members only) and fall. Campers can join activities such as board games, karaoke, drag and talent shows, the campfire, breakfasts in the barn and group hikes, or skip it all, and first-timers get a social to meet people. A winter retreat in February 2026 bridged the gap between camps. LOIA also hosts an Iowa City variety show fundraiser each April and offers $50 grocery gift cards to families who need help hosting a holiday meal in November.

The website also serves the wider community. The Rainbow Radar collects Pride events across Iowa, and For A Time Such As This maps free officiants, photographers, notaries and medical power of attorney and living will help for queer Iowans. A Medical POA page explains the forms and who decides if no paperwork exists.
