Apex for Youth
Community SpotlightNew York, NY · Serving New York City
Apex for Youth is the flagship youth empowerment, mentoring, and educational equity organization dedicated to serving Asian American and Pacific Islander youth from low-income and immigrant households throughout New York City. Founded in 1992 by grassroots community advocates in Chinatown who recognized that suburban stereotypes obscured severe poverty and isolation among urban Asian youth, the agency has grown over more than three decades into a comprehensive citywide institution serving over 2,700 young people annually from elementary school through early adulthood.
The organization’s cornerstone methodology centers on long-term, relationship-based mentoring. Recognizing that one in two Asian American youth in New York City lives in or near poverty, the agency recruits, trains, and supports nearly 1,000 volunteer adult mentors each year. Mentors are thoughtfully paired with students based on shared cultural backgrounds, personal interests, and educational goals, providing consistent guidance, encouragement, and advocacy that helps students navigate school challenges, family expectations, and personal development. These relationships often endure for many years, helping young people develop strong self-efficacy, cultural pride, and resilience as they grow into confident adults.
Academic enrichment and recreational development programs span every developmental stage of a young person's educational journey. Elementary school programs focus on foundational English literacy, phonics reading circles, and creative STEAM exploration that build early confidence in learning. In middle school, the Apex Athletics program integrates structured competitive basketball, volleyball, and physical fitness with leadership development, personal discipline, and cooperative teamwork. High school students participate in the College Access and Career Exploration academy, receiving intensive one-on-one SAT preparation, college essay editing, financial aid application guidance, college campus visits, and corporate workplace internships. The organization also awards competitive four-year college scholarships to graduating seniors to ensure financial hardship does not derail higher education ambitions.
Mental health wellness and identity development are woven into all agency initiatives. Through its licensed clinical mental health team, the organization provides free, culturally responsive individual psychotherapy and family support groups that address intergenerational trauma, immigrant family pressures, and racial discrimination. These counseling services create a welcoming environment where young people and their parents can discuss emotional well-being openly. For program alumni and older participants, the Young Adult Program delivers structured career networking, resume reviews, and industry mentorship that support economic mobility as graduates enter professional careers.
Families and students can access programs by contacting the central administrative office on Broadway in Lower Manhattan or submitting an enrollment application online. Multilingual staff members support families in English, Cantonese, Mandarin, Korean, Bengali, and Spanish to ensure full accessibility. Community members, young professionals, and corporate partners can advance the mission by applying to serve as volunteer mentors, hosting corporate career exploration days, or making tax-deductible charitable contributions to fund life-changing youth mentorship programs across New York City.
