Hamilton-Madison House
Community SpotlightNew York, NY · Serving Chinatown, Two Bridges, Lower East Side, and New York City
Hamilton-Madison House is a premier historic settlement house and multi-service community institution dedicated to advancing the well-being of immigrant, low-income, and multicultural residents throughout Lower Manhattan. Established in 1898 to serve incoming immigrant families arriving in the dense tenement neighborhoods of the Lower East Side, the organization has adapted continuously over nearly 130 years to meet the evolving linguistic, economic, and social needs of the Two Bridges, Chinatown, and Lower East Side communities. Today, it remains one of the largest and most comprehensive non-sectarian settlement agencies in New York City, serving thousands of children, adults, and seniors each year through dedicated neighborhood facilities.
The organization is widely recognized for its pioneering Behavioral Health and Specialized Mental Health Clinic, which stands as one of the oldest and largest Asian American mental health providers in New York City. Staffed by bilingual, bicultural psychiatrists, licensed clinical social workers, and mental health counselors, the clinic delivers outpatient psychotherapy, psychiatric assessments, medication management, and specialized chemical dependency treatment in Cantonese, Mandarin, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, Spanish, and English. These clinical services break cultural stigmas around mental healthcare and provide confidential relief to individuals and families experiencing emotional distress, intergenerational conflict, anxiety, depression, or historical trauma.
Early childhood education forms another foundational cornerstone of the agency’s multi-generational mission. The organization operates multiple licensed Head Start, Early Head Start, and universal preschool sites across Lower Manhattan, providing nurturing educational environments, developmental screenings, and nutritious daily meals to hundreds of infants, toddlers, and preschoolers each year. For school-age children and teenagers, the agency coordinates afterschool academic tutoring, STEM exploration, visual and performing arts workshops, and summer day camps that keep young people engaged in positive personal development outside of regular school hours.
Older adult empowerment and healthy aging are anchored by three full-service senior centers, including the Chinatown Senior Center, City Hall Senior Center, and Two Bridges Senior Center. These facilities serve as vibrant daily community hubs, providing hot, culturally familiar congregate lunches, case assistance with Medicare and Medicaid, wellness checkups, English literacy classes, calligraphy, and traditional musical arts. Staff also coordinate friendly home visits and telephone reassurance check-ins for homebound seniors, ensuring older neighbors remain socially connected, active, and well-supported in their own homes throughout their senior years.
Residents and families can access direct services by visiting the central administrative offices on South Street or contacting any of the neighborhood facility locations across Lower Manhattan. Dedicated intake coordinators assist clients with program enrollment and public benefit applications in multiple Asian languages and Spanish. Community members, corporate volunteers, and philanthropic partners can support the settlement house by volunteering in classrooms, serving meals to older adults, or making charitable financial contributions to sustain comprehensive community wellness programs across New York City.
