Lambda Legal
New York, NY · Serving Nationwide across the United States
Lambda Legal is the oldest and largest national legal organization dedicated to achieving full civil rights for lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, transgender people, and everyone living with HIV. Established in 1973 in New York City, the organization has served as the legal vanguard of the LGBTQ+ movement for more than five decades, winning landmark court victories that transformed American civil rights jurisprudence.
The organization’s primary vehicle for systemic change is strategic impact litigation in federal and state supreme courts. Its attorneys litigate precedent-setting cases defending marriage equality, workplace nondiscrimination, healthcare access for transgender youth and adults, parental rights, and asylum protections. Through specialized initiatives like the Transgender Rights Project and the HIV Project, the legal team challenges discriminatory state legislation, criminalization laws, and healthcare exclusions across the country.
Direct legal support is provided through the national Legal HelpDesk, which assists thousands of community members annually with legal information, discrimination intake, and referrals to pro bono counsel. The organization also leads public education campaigns and advocates for judicial independence and fair courts. Individuals facing discrimination can submit inquiries to the HelpDesk online or by phone. Legal professionals, advocates, and community members can get involved through pro bono partnerships, national benefit galas, or charitable financial donations.
