New York Urban League
Community SpotlightNew York, NY · Serving New York City (five boroughs)
The New York Urban League is the flagship civil rights, educational advancement, and economic mobility institution dedicated to empowering African Americans and other underserved communities throughout New York City. Established in 1919 during the Harlem Renaissance as an affiliate of the National Urban League, the agency has spent more than a century eliminating racial barriers, expanding educational access, building generational wealth, and championing civil rights across Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island.
Educational equity and youth development are central to the league's enduring legacy. Operating through the Whitney M. Young Jr. Education Center, the organization provides comprehensive academic tutoring, STEAM learning labs, leadership academies, and college readiness coaching for middle and high school students. The league's signature Annual Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Fair is one of the largest collegiate recruitment events in the Northeast, drawing thousands of students to meet directly with admissions deans, secure millions of dollars in institutional scholarships, and receive on-site college acceptances. In addition, the organization administers competitive college scholarships that ease the financial burden of higher education for local youth.
Economic self-reliance and small business growth are fostered through integrated workforce and entrepreneurial services. Through the Small Business Solutions Center, the organization provides minority entrepreneurs and business owners with specialized business plan reviews, digital transformation training, certified accounting guidance, and direct connections to capital resources and government procurement opportunities. The workforce development division collaborates with major corporate employers across finance, technology, healthcare, and public service to deliver career readiness training, resume development, and direct job placement.
Civic advocacy, research, and public policy initiatives ensure that the collective interests of Black New Yorkers are represented in municipal and statewide legislative debates. The organization publishes the State of Black New York research report, examining systemic disparities in housing, healthcare access, education funding, and economic development. The affiliate also convenes the annual Equal Opportunity Day Dinner and the Frederick Douglass Awards, celebrating community champions while raising vital philanthropic support for ongoing community programs.
Auxiliary engagement through the New York Urban League Young Professionals provides emerging leaders with opportunities for community service, board leadership development, and professional networking that cultivates the next generation of civil rights advocates. The auxiliary mobilizes young adults across all five boroughs for nonpartisan voter engagement campaigns, youth career days, mentorship initiatives, community cleanup projects, and philanthropic fundraising events that empower neighborhoods.
Community members can access educational resources, workforce training, and small business support by visiting the central headquarters in Harlem or contacting the office online. Civic leaders, alumni, corporate sponsors, and community volunteers can advance the mission by mentoring youth scholars, serving on event planning committees, or providing tax-deductible financial contributions to fund vital community empowerment programs across New York City.
