LGBT Center of Raleigh

Raleigh, NC · Serving Raleigh, Wake County, and the Research Triangle, North Carolina

Serves LGBTQ+ individuals, families, youth, and elders across Raleigh, Wake County, and the Research TriangleLGBTQIA+Registered nonprofit

The LGBT Center of Raleigh is the flagship community organization and support center dedicated to serving, empowering, and celebrating lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer individuals throughout Raleigh, Wake County, and the broader Research Triangle. Founded in 2008 by passionate community advocates who recognized the critical need for a dedicated physical sanctuary in North Carolina's capital city, the center has expanded into a comprehensive civic institution. By offering affirming community space, targeted social programs, and essential health navigation, the center ensures that all community members can live authentically and thrive with dignity.

The East Cabarrus Street facility serves as an open and accessible drop-in center featuring a welcoming community lounge, free computer workstations, meeting rooms, and an emergency community food pantry. A cherished feature of the center is its expansive lending library, one of the largest specialized LGBTQ+ collections in the Southeast, housing thousands of fiction, non-fiction, historical, and young adult volumes. Visitors frequently utilize the library as a peaceful gathering space to study, research queer history, or connect with fellow community members in an affirming atmosphere.

Direct support services address the distinct needs of diverse community populations across every generation. The center's Transgender Initiative coordinates multiple peer-led support groups, including Nonbinary Tea Time and gender-expansive discussion circles, where individuals navigate social transition, family relationships, and personal identity. Transgender community members also have access to free gender-affirming apparel and assistance with legal name-change procedures. For older adults, the center coordinates SAGE Raleigh, offering luncheons, wellness check-ins, and social gatherings that combat senior isolation and honor LGBTQ+ elders.

Community health and wellness initiatives are embedded across daily center operations. Recognizing ongoing disparities in healthcare access, the center collaborates with local public health clinics and community health workers to offer regular, free, and confidential HIV and STI testing. Staff and volunteers provide compassionate linkage to healthcare providers, connecting individuals with affirming medical care, mental health counseling, and preventative healthcare resources in a non-judgmental environment.

Youth and family initiatives offer essential lifelines for adolescents and their support systems throughout the Research Triangle. The center coordinates dedicated youth drop-in spaces, social game nights, and parent discussion groups where families can learn best practices for supporting their LGBTQ+ children. These gatherings provide a nurturing environment where adolescents build positive self-esteem and develop friendships with peers who share their lived experiences.

The center anchors the cultural landscape of the Triangle by organizing Out! Raleigh Pride, the capital city's official annual Pride festival. Drawing tens of thousands of participants to the streets of downtown Raleigh, this high-energy community celebration features multiple performance stages, local food purveyors, artisan vendors, and community nonprofit exhibits. Through its physical center, diverse programming, and signature public events, the LGBT Center of Raleigh fosters an enduring sense of belonging and strengthens the social fabric of North Carolina. By connecting individuals, affirming diverse identities, and mobilizing grassroots volunteers, the center ensures that the Triangle remains a welcoming home for all LGBTQ+ people.
