LGBTQ Center of Durham

Durham, NC · Serving Durham and the Research Triangle region, North Carolina

Serves LGBTQ+ youth, adults, and families in Durham and surrounding counties of the Research TriangleLGBTQIA+Registered nonprofit

The LGBTQ Center of Durham is the flagship community organization and support center dedicated to affirming, uplifting, and celebrating lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer individuals in Durham and the surrounding communities of the Research Triangle. Established in 2012, the center provides a vibrant physical gathering space where individuals across all life stages can access essential support systems, find belonging, and connect with affirming peers and local professionals. Through an intentional focus on equity and racial justice, the center works to dismantle systemic oppression while cultivating joy and connection throughout North Carolina.

The Hunt Street community facility serves as an accessible neighborhood drop-in center featuring a welcoming lounge, community library, food pantry supplies, computer workstations, and meeting rooms. Dedicated staff and volunteers offer direct information and referral services, assisting visitors with housing navigation, employment resources, affirming healthcare provider lists, and emergency mutual aid. By maintaining open public hours, the center ensures that residents facing economic hardship, discrimination, or family rejection have immediate access to a compassionate support network and vital community resources.

Youth and young adults benefit from specialized, age-affirming programming through the LGBTQ+ Youth Center of Durham. This initiative offers regular drop-in hours where teenagers can socialize in a supportive environment, participate in creative workshops, access tutoring support, and engage in leadership development opportunities. Adult mentors and peer leaders facilitate group discussions on identity exploration, school safety, and emotional wellness, helping young people develop positive self-concepts and enduring interpersonal connections that sustain them through school and early adulthood.

The center's Gender Resources, Advocacy, and Support Program provides comprehensive assistance for transgender, nonbinary, and gender-nonconforming individuals. The program facilitates multiple peer-led support groups addressing the unique realities of gender transition, social affirmation, and family dynamics. Participants also receive practical guidance on navigating legal name and gender-marker changes on identity documents, alongside direct referrals to gender-affirming clinicians, social workers, and mental health specialists practicing across the region.

Through the Southern Queer Survivors Network, the center extends trauma-informed advocacy and specialized healing resources to LGBTQ+ individuals affected by intimate partner violence, sexual assault, and hate crimes. Furthermore, the organization anchors regional LGBTQ+ cultural life by organizing the annual Pride: Durham, NC festival and parade, bringing thousands of community members, artists, and activists together for vibrant street processions, musical performances, and educational exhibits that celebrate Southern queer history and advance the ongoing movement for social justice.

Community engagement and grassroots volunteerism power every aspect of the organization's daily operations. Dozens of dedicated local volunteers assist as front-desk hospitality hosts, youth program facilitators, library curators, and event logistics coordinators. The center also actively participates in regional coalitions, partnering with local health clinics, legal aid societies, and school districts to advocate for inclusive municipal policies and protective non-discrimination ordinances throughout the Research Triangle. By uniting community members, local civic leaders, and grassroots advocates around shared goals of liberation and mutual aid, the center builds an enduring foundation of resilience and safety for generations to come.
