The T.R.U.T.H. Project
Houston, TX · Serving Greater Houston and the Southern United States
The T.R.U.T.H. Project, short for Telling Real Unapologetic Truth Through Healing, is a Houston nonprofit that educates and mobilizes LGBTQ+ communities of color and their allies through the social arts. Founded in 2011 to address the lack of dedicated resources and creative outlets for queer people of color, the organization harnesses visual art, dance, spoken word, and theater to cultivate emotional resilience, mental health awareness, and sexual health education. Its programs work to dismantle stigma and build supportive community environments where individuals can thrive.
The organization's artistic initiatives center on quarterly Social Arts Installments, which tackle critical community themes such as coming out, systemic discrimination, bullying prevention, HIV education, and transgender empowerment. Signature projects include the annual A Vibe Called Rest Fest, an outdoor gathering uniting artists and wellness practitioners to offer sound baths, yoga, bodywork, and communal reflection. The nonprofit also produces narrative storytelling campaigns such as From the Root, which shares personal accounts of family acceptance and mental wellness across the American South.
Community members and allies can attend artistic showcases, participate in free wellness workshops, or register for upcoming festival events through the organization's online portal. The nonprofit welcomes community volunteers to assist with event logistics and accepts tax-deductible donations that support artist stipends, venue rentals, and public wellness programming.
