About Juneteenth, A Freedom Celebration

The Elegba Folklore Society's annual Juneteenth observance in Richmond. It opens with a torch lit night walk along the Trail of Enslaved Africans and continues the next day with Dancing with the Ancestors at the African Burial Ground, with music, dance, children's activities, food and a cultural market.

What to expect

Juneteenth marks June 19, 1865, when news of the end of slavery reached Galveston, Texas. It became a federal holiday in 2021. Celebrations often include parades, music, food, history programs and family activities.
