National LGBTQ Task Force

The National LGBTQ Task Force was founded in New York City in 1973 as the National Gay Task Force and is the country's oldest national LGBTQ rights organization. It works for freedom, justice and equity for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer people and their families, with a focus on the issues where LGBTQ+ people are most affected, such as housing, racial and economic disparities and criminal justice.

Under Queering Democracy, the Task Force runs Queer the Vote and Queer the Census, and FedWatch, a network that monitors federal policy and advocates for people living at the intersections of marginalized identities. Queering Equity covers nondiscrimination protections and reproductive justice. Queering Faith supports people of faith who affirm LGBTQ+ people, including a year-long Trans Religious Leadership Cohort and the Shower of Stoles project.

Building Power trains the next generation of organizers through Building Queer Power Night School and the annual Creating Change Conference, which gathers movement leaders in a different city each year (Louisville, January 27 to 31, 2027). The Task Force Academy adds year-round learning, including the monthly X Is a Queer Issue conversation series and The OC, an ongoing organizing space. The Be You Ball gala and the Winter Party Festival bring the community together to celebrate.
