The Arc Nassau

The Arc Nassau has worked since 1974 to educate, motivate and encourage adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities in Nassau County, including people with Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, autism, spina bifida and Prader-Willi syndrome. It began as Hands & Hearts, organized by families, civic groups and educators, and its Yulee center was built in 1981 on land donated by Rayonier. Everything it does centers on helping each person live as independently as possible at home and in the community.

The Life Skills Development program, part of its Adult Developmental Training, offers hands-on daily learning in meal preparation, money management, communication, personal care and emotional wellness, along with gardening, cooking, arts and crafts and fitness. Community inclusion outings take participants to the library, art shows, nature walks, fishing trips and the beach, and door-to-door transportation across the service area makes it easier for families to take part.

Nassau Works is the employment readiness and supported employment program. It helps job seekers with discovery, pre-employment training, on-the-job training, resumes and interviews, then provides job coaching and follow-along support once they are hired, while encouraging local businesses to hire inclusively. Participants also gain paid work experience through the state's RESPECT of Florida program.

Donors can help The Arc Nassau build a group home for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities in Nassau County. Supporters can give online or by mail, donate in-kind items, or partner as sponsors and volunteers who lead workshops in art, music, gardening and recreation.
