PFLAG Athens Area

PFLAG Athens Area is the local PFLAG chapter for Athens and the surrounding counties, bringing together LGBTQIA+ people, parents, families, friends and allies to support one another, learn together and speak up for queer people in the community.

The chapter meets monthly for free discussion groups. The Parent/ally group is for anyone 18 and older, and welcomes parents and family members who are taking in the news of a loved one coming out, as well as LGBTQIA+ people who are looking for ideas about coming out to family and friends. A Young Adult group for people in their 18 to 30s meets alongside it, and the chapter aims to host child and teen social events too. Groups are open to everyone at any stage of their journey: people listen to others and are listened to without judgment, and newcomers are especially welcome. To protect privacy, the meeting location is shared with people who complete the form on the site.

The website also gathers resources in one place, including an "I need help now" page with crisis and mental health lines, family support and educational resources, mental health and medical referrals, and a glossary of LGBTQIA+ terms. PFLAG Athens Area works alongside local partners such as Athens Pride + Queer Collective, and took part in the inaugural Athens Pride parade in 2022.
