The LGBTQ Center
South Bend, IN · Serving Northern Indiana and Southwestern Michigan (Michiana region), centered in South Bend
The LGBTQ Center stands as Northern Indiana's primary gathering place and community resource dedicated to advancing inclusion, dignity, and equality for LGBTQ+ individuals and their families throughout the Michiana region. The organization traces its origins to August 2004, when community advocates opened a small independent bookstore and coffee gathering space called Another Bookstore in South Bend. As the shop quickly became an informal clearinghouse for individuals seeking welcoming physicians, affirming counselors, inclusive places of worship, and legal guidance, the founders recognized the profound need for a formalized, community-owned resource network.
In October 2005, the enterprise officially incorporated as the GLBT Resource Center of Michiana, securing 501(c)(3) nonprofit status and launching structured youth groups, local artist showcases, and comprehensive community referral guides. In 2016, following more than a decade of steady growth, the organization expanded into its current identity as The LGBTQ Center, establishing a modernized community facility on East Sample Street with community ribbon-cutting honors. Today, the center remains a welcoming home for thousands of community members across St. Joseph, Elkhart, and neighboring counties.
Direct human services and personal wellness form the foundation of the center's day-to-day operations. The organization provides licensed mental health counseling, offering accessible, culturally competent therapeutic support for individuals navigating identity exploration, family dynamics, and social transitions. A wide range of peer-led discussion and support circles meet regularly at the center, providing safe spaces for young adults, elders, and transgender community members to share lived experiences and build durable support networks. Additionally, the center coordinates wellness initiatives, linkage to gender-affirming healthcare, and community health fairs that provide free, confidential HIV and STI screenings in a welcoming environment.
Youth and basic needs assistance are central to the organization's community footprint. The center's youth program provides adolescents with weekly socialization, adult mentorship, educational workshops, and leadership development activities in an accepting environment. To alleviate socioeconomic hurdles, the center operates the Rainbow Locker, a community wardrobe that provides free gender-affirming apparel, professional attire, and everyday clothing to individuals experiencing financial hardship or family displacement. Visitors also benefit from a community lending library containing hundreds of volumes on LGBTQ+ history, literature, and health.
Beyond ongoing weekly programs, the center serves as a premier cultural convener for Northern Indiana. The organization coordinates both South Bend Pride and Elkhart Pride, drawing thousands of attendees annually for community festivals featuring artisan marketplaces, musical performances, family activities, and free public health screenings. The center also conducts professional diversity and equity training for regional employers, municipal departments, and healthcare systems, helping institutions adopt affirming workplace policies and inclusive customer practices. Community members can access center resources, explore volunteer openings, or support ongoing programming by contacting the South Bend office or contributing online through the center's digital platforms.
