Fairness Campaign
Community SpotlightLouisville, KY · Serving Kentucky
The Fairness Campaign is Kentucky's premier LGBTQ civil rights and advocacy organization, dedicated to securing comprehensive legal equality and dismantling systemic injustice across the commonwealth. Founded in 1991 by 10 Louisville community organizers, the non-profit began as a grassroots movement to pass municipal nondiscrimination protections. Over more than three decades, the campaign has expanded into a powerful statewide voice for LGBTQ Kentuckians, coordinating legislative lobbying, grassroots mobilization, coalition building, and public education across urban and rural communities alike.
At the core of the organization's legacy is the advancement of local Fairness Ordinances. After successfully guiding Louisville to adopt Kentucky's first comprehensive municipal fairness law, the campaign partnered with local advocates in communities of all sizes across the state. Through strategic community education, town halls, and constituent organizing, the campaign has helped more than 20 municipalities pass ordinances prohibiting discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity in employment, housing, and public accommodations. These ordinances now protect hundreds of thousands of commonwealth residents in cities ranging from large metropolitan centers to small rural towns. Staff members continue to travel across the state to advise city councils, conduct educational workshops, train community organizers, and empower local leaders seeking to introduce municipal fairness protections in their hometowns.
In Frankfort, the Fairness Campaign serves as the dedicated watchdog for LGBTQ rights within the Kentucky General Assembly. Staff and volunteer advocates monitor proposed legislation, testify before legislative committees, and coordinate statewide lobbying days. The organization works diligently to defeat harmful measures targeting transgender individuals, LGBTQ youth, and reproductive freedom, while continuously introducing and championing statewide nondiscrimination bills. Each legislative session, the campaign brings hundreds of community members to the state capitol for the Kentucky Statewide Fairness Rally, filling the capitol rotunda with voices demanding equal justice, safety, and dignity under the law.
The organization also builds statewide solidarity through active participation in regional and national coalitions. As the Kentucky member of the Equality Federation, the campaign connects commonwealth advocates with national policy resources, legal strategies, and organizing best practices. In addition, the organization works closely with racial justice and civil rights groups to advocate for intersectional equity, voting rights, and fair democratic processes. Signature community events include the annual Fairness Dinner, which brings together civic leaders, activists, and allies to celebrate movement progress, honor community pioneers, and fund ongoing advocacy work across the commonwealth.
Kentuckians looking to get involved with legislative advocacy, locate local fairness protections, or access nonpartisan voter education can explore toolkits and updates on the organization website. Community members can support the mission by volunteering at the annual Kentucky State Fair booth, participating in legislative action alerts, attending community rallies, or making tax-deductible financial contributions to ensure continuous advocacy for equality across the Bluegrass State.
