Pride Community Services Organization
Lexington, KY · Serving Central Kentucky
The Lexington Pride Center, founded in 1977 as the Pride Community Services Organization, stands as the oldest continuous LGBTQIA+ organization in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. For nearly five decades, the agency has created and managed safe, affirming, and inclusive spaces, programming, and essential services for LGBTQIA+ Kentuckians and their families. Operating from its community center on Waller Avenue near the University of Kentucky, the organization delivers all of its direct programs and resources free of charge to those it serves.
At the core of the center's mission is the provision of immediate, barrier-free assistance to vulnerable community members. The People's Market serves as a free community pantry offering non-perishable groceries, fresh produce, toiletries, and personal hygiene supplies to individuals and households experiencing economic hardship. The on-site PowerOn Computer Lab provides free high-speed internet access, printing, and digital workstations, enabling visitors to apply for employment, search for housing, access public benefits, and pursue educational goals.
The center also houses the Pride Library, an extensive repository of fiction, non-fiction, historical archives, and queer cultural materials. The collection provides community members and researchers with access to vital stories and educational resources that might otherwise be unavailable in public institutions. Through its Cultivating Pride initiative, the center conducts community education, cultural competency training, and educational presentations for local businesses, schools, healthcare providers, and civic organizations seeking to foster more inclusive environments across Central Kentucky.
Social connection and mutual aid remain central to the facility's daily operations. The center hosts a diverse calendar of peer-led support groups, social gatherings, and creative circles catering to queer youth, transgender and nonbinary individuals, older adults, and intersectional communities. These gatherings offer compassionate spaces where individuals can share experiences, build friendships, and find solace free from discrimination or marginalization. Furthermore, the agency provides meeting space and fiscal sponsorship for emerging grassroots initiatives working to improve queer life throughout the commonwealth.
Beyond its neighborhood facility, the organization produces the annual Lexington Pride Festival, the signature celebration of LGBTQIA+ identity and unity in Central Kentucky. The downtown festival draws tens of thousands of attendees, featuring live entertainment, local artisans, community organization booths, and civic speakers. The center emphasizes total accessibility at the festival, providing American Sign Language interpretation, dedicated accessible seating, sensory relief zones, and accessible transportation options to ensure every community member can participate.
Individuals in need of assistance, support groups, or basic necessities can visit the Waller Avenue facility during weekly open hours or connect with staff by email. The organization relies on community solidarity to sustain its operations. Community members can get involved by volunteering for center hospitality, sorting donations for The People's Market, helping organize the annual festival, or contributing tax-deductible financial donations to maintain free community services.
