The Spectrum Center of Hattiesburg
Hattiesburg, MS · Serving Hattiesburg and South Mississippi Pine Belt
The Spectrum Center of Hattiesburg provides a welcoming physical home, vital peer support, and comprehensive resources for LGBTQIA+ people across the Pine Belt region of South Mississippi. Founded in 2014 by community organizers who recognized the urgent need for safe, affirming spaces in rural and semi-rural Mississippi, the grassroots center advocates for full inclusion, bodily autonomy, and social connection for sexual and gender minorities.
The center operates regular community groups addressing the specific needs of diverse demographics. Its Jellyfish Youth Group offers a supportive environment where adolescent and young adult LGBTQIA+ people can socialize, express their creativity, and build confidence away from school and social pressures. For transgender and gender-diverse community members, the center coordinates dedicated trans and nonbinary peer circles that provide guidance on healthcare navigation, family relationships, and personal affirmation. The organization also hosts educational skill-sharing workshops where participants learn practical life and artistic skills.
Mutual aid and direct assistance form another essential component of the organization's work. The center offers crisis resource navigation, emergency mutual aid funds, and referrals to affirming medical and legal professionals throughout South Mississippi. Through community organizing and public events, the center works to remodel its historic facility, expand direct services, and advance local nondiscrimination protections across Hattiesburg.
