Garden State Equality

Asbury Park, NJ · Serving New Jersey

Serves LGBTQ+ individuals, students, educators, and families across the state of New JerseyLGBTQIA+Registered nonprofit

Garden State Equality is New Jersey's premier statewide LGBTQ+ civil rights, education, and advocacy organization. Founded in 2004, the organization has spearheaded historic legislative victories including marriage equality, comprehensive anti-bullying protections, statewide nondiscrimination statutes, and legal shields for reproductive and gender-affirming healthcare providers. With over 150,000 members, the organization operates from administrative headquarters in Asbury Park and works alongside grassroots coalitions to ensure lived equality for LGBTQ+ individuals and families across all 21 New Jersey counties.

A central focus of the organization's direct services is the Name Change Project, which provides free procedural guidance, legal navigation, and court fee assistance to help transgender, nonbinary, and gender-expansive residents update their legal names and gender markers on birth certificates, driver's licenses, and state identification records. Navigators walk community members step-by-step through court filings, publication waivers, and agency notifications, eliminating bureaucratic obstacles that prevent people from possessing accurate legal documentation. Complementing this legal navigation, the group manages a direct distribution service providing gender-affirming garments, such as chest binders, packers, and shapewear, at no cost to community members experiencing financial hardship.

In healthcare, the organization tackles systemic disparities through health equity campaigns, cultural competency training, and provider networking. Staff maintain an interactive Affirming Healthcare Map that connects community members with vetted primary care doctors, endocrinologists, behavioral therapists, and specialized clinics across the state. Through professional training programs, the agency instructs regional healthcare networks, hospital systems, eldercare facilities, and social service providers on trauma-informed, affirming clinical practices that respect patient dignity and promote culturally competent treatment for all populations.

Educational initiatives focus on creating safe and supportive learning environments for youth throughout the public education system. Staff deliver customized professional development workshops for school boards, educators, and counselors, helping school districts implement New Jersey's statutory LGBTQ+ inclusive curriculum and establish protective anti-bias policies. The organization also coordinates voter education efforts, nonpartisan candidate forums, legislative town halls, and community forums that mobilize residents to participate in local government and protect democratic civil rights.

Community healing and mutual aid are promoted through the Communities Healing Together initiative, offering trauma-informed healing circles, wellness workshops, and mental health resources centered on racial justice and intersectional equity. This holistic work acknowledges the cumulative stress of systemic marginalization and equips participants with self-care tools, restorative practices, and interpersonal connection. Leadership development programs and youth advocacy summits further empower emerging student leaders to organize equality initiatives in their local hometowns.

Annual signature initiatives include Equality in Motion, a multi-city community fundraiser and 5K gathering held simultaneously in Asbury Park, Camden, and Montclair. These gatherings celebrate LGBTQ+ resilience, raise critical resources for community assistance funds, and reinforce ties between local community partners, corporate allies, and neighborhood advocates across all twenty-one counties of the state.
