The LOFT LGBTQ+ Community Center
Community SpotlightWhite Plains, NY · Serving Westchester County and the Lower Hudson Valley
The LOFT LGBTQ+ Community Center stands as the premier community anchor and advocacy institution for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer residents across Westchester County and the lower Hudson Valley. Founded in 1983 through the collaboration of local grassroots activists who gathered above a White Plains storefront, the organization was established to provide a secure and affirming gathering space during an era of significant social isolation. Over four decades of steady community service, the center has expanded into a full-scale non-profit institution offering comprehensive social, educational, and wellness programming tailored to community members of every generation throughout the region.
Central to the organization's mission is creating spaces where individuals can share lived experiences and build durable support networks. The center coordinates an expansive roster of facilitated peer discussion groups addressing essential topics such as coming out, nonbinary identities, interpersonal relationships, family acceptance, and personal wellness. To address the distinct needs of gender-diverse individuals, the agency developed Trans Support of the Hudson Valley, an initiative delivering affirming peer circles, community navigation assistance, social activities, and supportive resources for transgender, nonbinary, and gender-expansive individuals.
Recognizing that older LGBTQ+ adults face distinct risks of isolation and healthcare disparities, The LOFT established Silver Connections, an active program serving adults ages 55 and older. The program offers regular social luncheons, cultural outings, health literacy workshops, and recreational activities that nurture lasting community bonds. Through this specialized work, the organization ensures that long-time community pioneers maintain dependable social support networks and access to affirming care options throughout their retirement years.
In addition to ongoing weekly gatherings, The LOFT acts as a cultural and educational leader across the Hudson Valley. The organization hosts Westchester Pride, the county's flagship public celebration featuring musical entertainment, civic speakers, and dozens of non-profit resource exhibits. The center also convenes the Hudson Valley TransForum, an annual regional educational conference offering workshops on legal advocacy, medical access, and community empowerment for transgender individuals and active allies. Through its arts partnerships, the center supports emerging LGBTQ+ culture bearers through dedicated creative residencies and community art exhibits.
To ensure community members stay connected to vital resources, the agency produces OUTSPOKEN, an annual regional directory distributed during major civic gatherings that highlights affirming healthcare clinics, non-profit agencies, and supportive local enterprises. The center also delivers educational presentations and cultural competency workshops to regional school districts, municipal departments, and healthcare systems, equipping professionals with the knowledge needed to foster affirming environments for LGBTQ+ clients and youth.
Operating from its headquarters on Bryant Avenue in White Plains with plans for a modern community facility featuring supportive senior housing, The LOFT continues to evolve to meet the needs of regional residents. Supported by dedicated volunteers, philanthropic partners, and civic leaders, the organization fosters an inclusive lower Hudson Valley where all LGBTQ+ individuals are respected, empowered, and celebrated throughout their lives.
