Blue Ridge Pride
Asheville, NC · Serving Western North Carolina and the Blue Ridge Mountain region
Blue Ridge Pride serves as the premier community anchor and cultural celebration for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer individuals, families, and allies throughout Western North Carolina. Established in 2009 by local community advocates seeking to create an open public celebration in downtown Asheville, the organization was legally incorporated as Blue Ridge Pride Center Inc. Over more than a decade and a half of continuous community service, the agency has grown from an annual festival committee into a comprehensive year-round organization dedicated to advocacy, celebration, and mutual support across the Blue Ridge Mountains.
The annual Blue Ridge Pride Festival stands as the organization's signature public gathering, attracting tens of thousands of participants to downtown Asheville's Pack Square. The multi-stage festival showcases regional musical artists, theatrical performers, and guest speakers who highlight regional civil rights initiatives. A bustling community street fair features more than two hundred vendor booths, including local non-profit service providers, affirming faith communities, craft artisans, and civic organizations. To address critical healthcare disparities in mountain communities, the festival hosts mobile clinical teams offering free, confidential rapid HIV and STI testing, healthcare navigation, and wellness education.
Beyond festival operations, the organization maintains a physical community center facility on Patton Avenue that serves as an accessible regional hub. The center provides meeting space for local grassroots groups, peer-led support circles, and educational panel discussions. Staff advocates curate an extensive regional community calendar that connects residents across mountain counties to social events, peer support groups, and civic meetings. By establishing affinity networks for queer older adults, families with LGBTQ+ youth, and working professionals, the center actively combats geographic isolation in Appalachia.
Youth empowerment and educational initiatives form another key dimension of the organization's regional programming. Blue Ridge Pride partners with local youth groups, schools, and collegiate student alliances to offer youth leadership workshops, intergenerational story-sharing circles, and artistic mentoring. These programs provide younger community members with safe spaces to express their creativity, learn from community history, and build meaningful relationships with affirming adult mentors who understand the unique dynamics of growing up in rural and mountain communities across the region.
Collaborative advocacy and educational partnerships complete the organization's community advancement mission. Blue Ridge Pride partners with regional healthcare providers, educational institutions, and municipalities to provide cultural competency consultations and foster welcoming local environments. Through volunteer leadership committees, disaster relief coordination, educational panels, and community sponsorship grants, the nonprofit mobilizes community power to protect civil rights, support emerging grassroots initiatives, and build an inclusive Western North Carolina where every person can live authentically with dignity. By fostering community resilience and public education, the organization strengthens belonging across the mountain region. Through expansive public celebrations and everyday community services, the center fosters lasting safety, equality, and mutual care throughout western North Carolina.
