LGBTQ Center of the Cape Fear Coast

Community Spotlight

Wilmington, NC · Serving Cape Fear region and southeastern North Carolina

Serves LGBTQ+ youth, adults, older adults, and allies in Wilmington and southeastern North CarolinaLGBTQIA+Registered nonprofit

The LGBTQ Center of the Cape Fear Coast serves as the primary regional community center for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer individuals and their allies across southeastern North Carolina. The organization began in 2008 as the Frank Harr Foundation, created by Ken Cox to preserve the lifelong civil rights leadership of his partner Frank Harr. In 2021, the board adopted the current name to ensure that residents seeking affirming spaces could readily identify and access its services. Today, as an active member of CenterLink, the center operates as an essential hub of education, solidarity, social gathering, and resource referral throughout the coastal Cape Fear area.

Youth programming stands as a core priority for the organization. The Wilmington Pride Youth Group welcomes young people ages 12 to 18 for structured peer gatherings, game nights, and creative workshops led by vetted adult facilitators. These spaces offer adolescents a secure environment where they can build healthy friendships, explore identity questions, and receive compassionate mentorship without fear of discrimination or rejection. In addition, the center hosts the annual Pride Prom, giving regional high school and college youth an affirming, joyful formal dance experience that celebrates authentic self-expression in a welcoming setting.

The center similarly prioritizes the well-being of older generations through its collaboration with the Silver Pride Circle. Recognizing that older LGBTQ+ adults frequently face social isolation, housing insecurity, and fragmented support networks, the group organizes regular social coffee hours, cultural excursions, and health education forums for individuals age 50 and older. These gatherings enable long-term residents to maintain vital friendships, share lived history, and participate in peer-led community service projects across New Hanover County and neighboring coastal towns.

Direct support and inclusion initiatives also encompass specialized groups like Breaking the Binary, a regular peer circle for transgender and gender-nonconforming community members seeking mutual guidance, shared experiences, and healthcare navigation advice. Beyond group meetings, the center works with local health partners such as Seeds of Healing to raise awareness regarding HIV testing, sexual wellness resources, and inclusive clinical care. Center leaders also facilitate social events like queer family playdates, game nights, and monthly coffee socials that connect the wider regional community.

Through its professional Safe Zone workshops, the center educates local universities, healthcare organizations, civic agencies, and private employers on LGBTQ+ terminology, interpersonal respect, and structural equity. These educational efforts build more welcoming workplace cultures and clinical environments throughout southeastern North Carolina. Center staff also distribute educational materials across local schools and civic groups to foster regional understanding and intersectional solidarity.

Community members can get help by calling, texting, or writing center staff for referrals to affirmative mental health providers, legal advocates, and emergency community resources. Supporters can contribute by volunteering at youth events, facilitating peer discussion circles, attending the annual fundraising gala, or making tax-deductible contributions to support ongoing center operations.
