The Arc of Wilson County
Wilson, NC · Serving Wilson County
The Arc of Wilson County supports children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families throughout Wilson County. Chartered in 1982 as a local affiliate of The Arc, the organization focuses on creating inclusive recreational opportunities, fostering personal independence, and building strong community connections where every individual is treated with respect.
Signature initiatives center on structured summer camps designed to engage participants across different life stages. Camp Sunshine provides specialized day camp activities for school-age youth, while Camp Little Sunshine accommodates early childhood campers and Camp Bright Sunshine offers social and creative experiences for adults. Campers take part in cooperative games, arts and crafts, bowling excursions, music, and community field trips that encourage peer socialization, motor skills, and self-confidence.
In addition to summer camp sessions, the organization assists parents and caregivers with educational advocacy year-round. Staff and volunteers provide guidance for families navigating individualized education programs, 504 plans, and school accommodation requests. The organization also hosts inclusive literacy sessions, such as Sensory Storytime, tailored to neurodivergent children.
Community traditions further connect participants with the wider Wilson community. The annual Wilson Gobble Wobble race brings together local runners, walkers, participants, and volunteers on Thanksgiving morning to raise essential funding for community programming, alongside seasonal holiday gatherings and social outings.
