The Enrichment Center

Winston-Salem, NC · Serving Forsyth County and the Piedmont Triad region

Serves Adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families in Forsyth County and the Piedmont TriadDisabilityRegistered nonprofit

The Enrichment Center supports adults living with intellectual and developmental disabilities throughout Forsyth County and the surrounding Piedmont Triad region. Founded in 1983 by a dedicated group of parents seeking purposeful opportunities for their children following high school graduation, the organization has grown into a cornerstone resource for disability services in Northwest North Carolina. Operating from a spacious 65,000-square-foot campus located on South Marshall Street near historic Old Salem, the center fosters independence, dignity, and personal growth for more than 140 adults every day.

At the core of the organization's philosophy is the conviction that creative expression unlocks human potential and nurtures self-worth. The signature arts-based day program invites participants into specialized studios where they work alongside professional instructors across multiple disciplines, including pottery, canvas painting, glasswork, jewelry design, theater, and music. Participants develop fine motor skills, express their individuality, and explore new creative interests in an encouraging environment tailored to their individual abilities. Through creative exploration, participants build self-esteem while finding authentic ways to communicate their perspectives and life experiences.

The on-site Gateway Gallery serves as a public retail venue and exhibition space where participants display and sell their creations. Open to visitors throughout the week, the gallery enables artists to earn a direct paycheck from their artwork, build entrepreneurial skills, and interact with patrons, gallery visitors, and regional art collectors during special exhibitions and community events. These interactions bridge community divides and celebrate the significant artistic accomplishments of adults with developmental disabilities in Winston-Salem.

Beyond studio arts, The Enrichment Center operates an extensive supported employment and vocational rehabilitation program. Recognizing that meaningful work provides dignity and financial independence, trained job coaches meet participants where they are to assess workplace strengths, build resume and interview skills, and facilitate competitive job placement with inclusive employers across the Piedmont Triad. Coaches provide ongoing on-site mentoring and retention support to ensure long-term professional success and collaborative relationships with area businesses. Participants earn competitive wages in retail, hospitality, office administration, and service industries throughout Forsyth County.

The organization also runs community living and networking supports designed to help participants engage fully in civic life. Direct support professionals assist individuals in navigating public transit, participating in community volunteer work, attending cultural outings, and developing essential household and financial management skills. These programs honor each individual's choices and encourage self-determination in daily routines, empowering participants to live active and engaged lives within their home neighborhoods.

Accredited by the Council on Quality and Leadership, The Enrichment Center maintains high standards of person-centered care. Supported by Medicaid waiver programs, local foundation grants, the Winston-Salem Arts Council, and private contributors, the center continues to expand opportunities for full community inclusion. By combining fine arts training with job placement and independent living coaching, The Enrichment Center provides an enduring foundation where adults with disabilities thrive as valued and active contributors to Winston-Salem.
