Youth OUTright WNC

Asheville, NC · Serving Western North Carolina including Buncombe, Henderson, and surrounding mountain counties

Serves LGBTQIA+ youth ages 11 to 24 and their families in Western North CarolinaLGBTQIA+Registered nonprofit

Youth OUTright WNC empowers lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, intersex, and asexual youth across the mountain communities of Western North Carolina. Established in 2009, the youth-centered non-profit provides affirming peer spaces, leadership training, and educational resources designed to build resilience, foster authentic self-expression, and eliminate systemic discrimination impacting young people ages 11 through 24 in regional schools and communities.

The organization facilitates regular peer discussion groups and social gatherings that provide safe, affirming environments for young people to connect. Separate programs tailored for middle school and high school youth offer creative activities, open discussions on identity and mental wellness, and opportunities to build lasting friendships outside school settings. Experienced adult mentors and youth facilitators guide each session, ensuring participants feel supported and respected. The organization also hosts family education workshops that help parents navigate gender affirmation and create supportive home environments.

Youth leadership development and civic advocacy represent another vital pillar of the agency's regional work. Its Trans Youth Advocate Training Program equips young trans and nonbinary leaders with public speaking skills, policy literacy, and organizing tools to advocate for inclusive policies in local school districts and municipal bodies. By partnering with regional school educators, healthcare providers, and youth agencies, Youth OUTright works to create safe, affirming communities throughout Appalachia.
