Equality Ohio
Cleveland, OH · Serving State of Ohio
Equality Ohio advocates for an Ohio where justice, dignity, and self-determination belong to every resident regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. Founded in 2005 by community leaders responding to discriminatory statewide ballot measures, the non-profit organization works through two coordinated branches: the Equality Ohio Education Fund, a 501(c)(3) charitable entity delivering community education and direct legal services, and Equality Ohio, a 501(c)(4) civic advocacy arm pursuing legislative reform.
A central component of the organization's work is the Equality Ohio Legal Clinic, which provides direct legal advice and representation to low-income LGBTQ+ Ohioans. Staff attorneys assist clients navigating identity-based discrimination in employment, housing, and public accommodations, while also guiding transgender and nonbinary individuals through the process of legal name and gender marker updates. The clinic operates remotely to ensure accessible legal support for rural, suburban, and urban residents across all 88 counties in the state.
At the state and municipal levels, Equality Ohio monitors proposed policies, educates public officials on the needs of LGBTQ+ families, and builds non-partisan civic coalitions. The organization collaborates with corporate leaders, grassroots organizations, and local municipalities to advance municipal nondiscrimination ordinances and foster safe, welcoming educational environments. Community members can access educational resources, participate in civic advocacy trainings, and connect with regional equality networks to advance fair treatment across Ohio.
