The Arc of Allen County
Lima, OH · Serving Allen County, Ohio
The Arc of Allen County advocates for the rights, dignity, and full community participation of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families throughout Lima and surrounding rural communities. Founded in 1954 by parents seeking educational opportunities and social activities for children excluded from public schools, the nonprofit has spent seven decades fostering inclusion and expanding community access across western Ohio.
The organization coordinates year-round programs designed to build confidence, teach life skills, and nurture peer friendships. During the summer months, the agency operates specialized day camps offering adaptive arts, sports, nature exploration, music, and artistic activities tailored to children and teenagers of diverse abilities. These camps provide participants with enriching recreational experiences while offering dependable respite for parents and caregivers.
In addition to youth recreation, The Arc organizes regular community gatherings for adults, including seasonal dances, bowling leagues, and festive celebrations that combat social isolation and foster durable neighborhood connections. Staff members also assist families in navigating complex social services, county developmental disability boards, and special education individualized education plans. Through public education, collaborative partnerships with local service agencies, and tireless grassroots advocacy, The Arc of Allen County ensures that individuals of all abilities are embraced as valued, contributing neighbors.
