Basic Rights Oregon
Portland, OR · Serving Oregon
Basic Rights Oregon works to ensure that all lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer Oregonians experience lived equality and legal protection throughout the state. Formed in 1996 to counter discriminatory statewide ballot measures, the organization has spearheaded landmark legislative campaigns that transformed Oregon into one of the country's most legally protective states for LGBTQ+ communities. The organization combines statehouse lobbying, grassroots organizing, and public education to protect and expand civil rights across all 36 counties.
Legislative and policy advocacy centers on defending civil rights, securing gender-affirming health care access, preventing workplace and housing discrimination, and protecting LGBTQ+ students in public education. Working alongside lawmakers in Salem, the organization drafts proactive legislation, coordinates committee testimony, and monitors policy implementation across state agencies. Through its Transgender Justice program, the organization works to dismantle racial and economic barriers confronting trans and nonbinary residents, focusing on trans women of color and individuals navigating correctional systems.
Grassroots organizing and public education empower community members across urban and rural counties. Regional organizers mobilize volunteers for voter education campaigns, canvassing drives, and community listening sessions. The organization publishes comprehensive election endorsement guides to inform voters about candidates' records on equality issues, runs civic engagement trainings, and hosts the annual Ignite Gala to unite supporters and celebrate community champions.
