The Arc of Benton County
Corvallis, OR · Serving Benton County
The Arc of Benton County stands as the premier grassroots advocacy and direct service organization for children, adults, and families navigating intellectual and developmental disabilities throughout Benton County, Oregon. Established in 1957 by passionate local parents and community advocates, the chapter has spent nearly seven decades dismantling social barriers, championing legal protections, and building an inclusive regional community where people with disabilities lead rich, self-determined lives. Operating from its Corvallis administrative office, the agency serves as a vital bridge connecting participants with state benefits, educational advocacy, crisis support, and meaningful social opportunities that cultivate lasting self-esteem.
Direct life-enrichment and vocational development programs form the core of the agency's daily work. The Arc Achievement Program provides structured, hands-on learning modules focused on independent living skills, healthy nutrition, household budgeting, social communication, and job readiness. Working alongside compassionate mentors, adult participants build personal confidence and practical competencies that support independent community living, personal safety, and workplace success. Case managers provide personalized family consultations, helping participants identify unique personal goals and navigate community resources. For school-aged youth, the chapter coordinates the Corvallis Summer Club and seasonal holiday activities, offering adaptive arts, sports, and outdoor field trips that provide meaningful recreation and vital caregiver respite.
Communication accessibility and public safety represent significant focal points for the organization. The chapter established the CommCard Program, an innovative service providing customized, durable communication cards for individuals who are nonverbal, have speech differences, or experience communication challenges during stressful moments. These cards outline preferred communication styles, emergency contacts, medical needs, and personal health details, serving as indispensable aids when interacting with law enforcement, first responders, transit drivers, healthcare workers, and local retail clerks. By bridging gaps in understanding, CommCards prevent misunderstandings and protect vulnerable individuals in stressful or unfamiliar settings.
The organization's mission is deeply intertwined with local community life through its thriving social enterprises. The Arc operates two community thrift stores located in Corvallis and Philomath. In addition to offering affordable, secondhand goods to local households, these thrift stores function as inclusive vocational training centers. Program participants gain valuable hands-on experience in merchandise processing, sorting, pricing, customer service, cash handling, and retail teamwork, preparing them for competitive integrated employment in the local workforce while generating sustainable revenue that directly funds the chapter's charitable programs year after year.
In addition to direct client programming, The Arc of Benton County serves as a tireless community educator and system navigator, helping families access state developmental disability services, individualized education programs, and community healthcare. Supported by store patrons, community donors, civic leaders, philanthropic foundations, and dedicated volunteers, the chapter continues to champion dignity, opportunity, equal rights, and full belonging for all individuals across Benton County. Through public awareness campaigns and inclusive community partnerships, the organization demonstrates that every neighbor contributes inherent value to community life.
