Bradbury-Sullivan LGBT Community Center
Allentown, PA · Serving Lehigh Valley
Bradbury-Sullivan LGBT Community Center serves as the premier community home, health advocate, and cultural institution for LGBTQ+ individuals and families across Pennsylvania's Lehigh Valley. Established in 2014 by community organizers seeking a dedicated, affirming facility, the organization opened its vibrant center on West Maple Street at Bayard Rustin Way in downtown Allentown in 2016. Today, the multi-service agency serves thousands of residents across Lehigh, Northampton, and neighboring counties, leading regional civil rights advocacy, delivering vital human services, and fostering celebratory community pride.
Health equity and basic-needs stabilization represent central pillars of the center's direct operations. The Care Cupboard provides an affirming, client-choice food pantry that supplies fresh produce, shelf-stable groceries, hygiene items, and household supplies to individuals and families facing economic hardship. The healthcare equity department coordinates accessible clinical resources, including free walk-in rapid HIV and STI testing, mpox vaccinations, and specialized oncology and tobacco cessation initiatives such as Puff Free Pride. Recognizing systemic disparities, the center conducts foundational research, leading the biennial Pennsylvania LGBTQIA+ Health Survey and hosting the statewide Pennsylvania LGBTQIA+ Health Summit to educate medical clinicians and influence public health funding.
Intergenerational community programming ensures that queer residents of every life stage have a safe and validating space to connect. The youth and family services division coordinates after-school programs, game nights, and social activities for teenagers, alongside peer circles for parents of gender-diverse children. The older adult initiative delivers weekly wellness programs, social luncheons, and community outings tailored for LGBTQ+ seniors ages 55 and older, combating the profound isolation often experienced by older queer adults. Diverse identity-based support circles meet regularly throughout each month, including dedicated groups for transgender and nonbinary individuals, bisexual community members, asexual and aromantic peers, and LGBTQ+ people of color through the Shadez network.
Cultural arts, education, and public celebration enrich the civic fabric of the entire region. The center houses the Bradbury-Sullivan LGBT Community Archive and the extensive Percy Anderson LGBT Library, offering thousands of volumes of queer literature, history, and academic research. Its community galleries host rotating exhibitions featuring visual artists from across the mid-Atlantic region, accompanied by artist receptions, author readings, community book discussions, and film screenings. Through its LGBTQ+ Education Institute, staff provide professional development, diversity workshops, and cultural competency training for regional school districts, municipal agencies, and healthcare networks.
Public celebration culminates each summer when the organization organizes Lehigh Valley Pride, a landmark regional festival drawing thousands of participants to celebrate visibility, equality, and collective liberation. Through a combination of direct clinical services, mutual aid, cultural enrichment, health research, and community organizing, the center ensures that LGBTQ+ individuals across the Lehigh Valley have access to affirming resources, compassionate support, and an enduring sense of belonging throughout their lives.
