Community Spotlight

Harrisburg, PA · Serving South-Central Pennsylvania, including Dauphin, Cumberland, York, and Lancaster Counties

Serves LGBTQ+ youth, adults, families, and allies across South-Central PennsylvaniaLGBTQIA+Registered nonprofit

The LGBT Center of Central PA stands as the premier community center and cultural resource hub for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer individuals and their allies across South-Central Pennsylvania. Tracing its origins to 2004 when community advocates convened under the guidance of The Foundation for Enhancing Communities, the organization formally incorporated in 2006 to address documented regional needs for dedicated queer social spaces and resources. In 2009, the center significantly broadened its impact by merging with Common Roads, a pioneering LGBTQ+ youth support organization active since 1993. Today, operating from its multi-level facility on North Front Street in Midtown Harrisburg, the center serves more than 2,000 people annually across Dauphin, Cumberland, York, and Lancaster Counties.

Direct community gathering and youth empowerment are central to the center's mission. The Midtown Harrisburg facility offers a warm, accessible space where individuals can drop in, read in the LGBTQ+ lending library, access computers, or find community resources. For youth and young adults, the Common Roads program delivers structured peer support groups, creative arts activities, and social events facilitated by trained adult mentors. These gatherings provide a nurturing environment where adolescents can explore identity, cultivate leadership abilities, and build supportive networks of peers facing similar developmental experiences.

Adult programming and peer mutual support address diverse life stages and intersecting identities. The center hosts regular peer-led support groups for transgender and nonbinary individuals, bisexual and questioning adults, older community members, and parents and caregivers of LGBTQ+ youth. Professional staff also coordinate the Trans Health Fund, a dedicated mutual aid initiative that awards direct microgrants to transgender and gender-expansive residents. These funds help recipients offset out-of-pocket medical care expenses, mental health counseling fees, hormone replacement therapies, and legal costs associated with state and federal name and gender marker corrections.

Cultural preservation and public education represent an internationally recognized cornerstone of the organization's regional legacy. Initiated in 2012, the LGBT Center of Central PA History Project operates in formal scholarly partnership with the Dickinson College Archives and Special Collections. The project actively collects, preserves, and presents the lived experiences of LGBTQ+ individuals in Central Pennsylvania through dozens of recorded oral histories, archival documents, personal photographs, and community artifacts. Winning national awards for archival advocacy, the collection supports traveling exhibitions that visit regional universities, museums, and civic centers to educate the general public on local civil rights struggles.

Community engagement, professional training, and festive celebrations further strengthen regional equality. The organization conducts tailored LGBTQ+ cultural competency workshops for corporate employers, healthcare providers, school districts, and social service agencies, equipping staff to implement inclusive institutional practices. The center also convenes regional supporters through signature celebrations, including the annual FAB gala, an elegant community benefit that raises essential operating funds. Through this holistic combination of physical hospitality, youth leadership, emergency financial aid, and historical documentation, the LGBT Center of Central PA ensures that queer individuals throughout the capital region can live openly and with dignity.
