Urban League of the State of Arkansas

The Urban League of the State of Arkansas works to advance economic and social prosperity for Arkansans by opening access to opportunity in health, education, jobs and housing. One of the few statewide affiliates of the National Urban League, it runs a central office in Little Rock with satellite offices in Springdale and Helena.

Its education work centers on the Boys and Men Opportunity Success Team (BMOST), which prepares boys and men of color for success in school, career and life. BMOST includes a summer Youth Fellowship that employs young men ages 16 to 19 in leadership and skill development, an Elevator Speech Competition that connects future professionals with established ones, and 21st Century Ready career-readiness training. The Equity and Excellence in Education Discussion Series brings community members and education leaders together around fairness in schools.

For adults, the Financial Literacy Program offers forums, classes and counseling on budgeting, debt, credit and wealth building, and housing services cover mortgage readiness, home repair, renter's rights, fair housing, and eviction and foreclosure prevention. Recent events have included a Home Buyer Seminar, credit-building workshops, a women entrepreneur tea and pitch, and a career day at Shorter College with resume, LinkedIn and headshot help. The Healthcare Outreach Program links Arkansans to health education and community resources, the Honeybee Garden teaches youth and older adults to grow and cook their own food, and civic engagement work brings voter registration and education to neighborhoods with faith and community partners.
