Urban League of Northwest Indiana
Gary, IN · Serving Lake, Porter, and LaPorte counties (Northwest Indiana)
The Urban League of Northwest Indiana advances social and economic equality for African American residents and minority communities throughout Lake, Porter, and LaPorte counties. Established in 1945 as the Urban League of Gary, the organization expanded its regional mission to bridge opportunity gaps in education, economic development, and civic leadership. Operating from its headquarters on Broadway in Gary, the league partners with regional schools, universities, civic leaders, and corporate employers to foster systemic economic mobility.
Educational advancement remains a central pillar of the organization's community footprint. The signature Annual Scholarship Fair at Indiana University Northwest connects hundreds of graduating seniors with admissions officers and financial aid representatives from dozens of colleges and universities. Complementary college and career readiness workshops provide students with application guidance, essay coaching, and direct access to academic scholarships, including partnerships with local foundations and business partners.
For working adults and local neighborhoods, the league provides career development resources, business growth cohorts, and housing intake assistance for security deposits and emergency rental needs. Grassroots community revitalization is supported through the Federation of Block Clubs, which distributes mini-grants for neighborhood beautification projects. The league also leads workplace diversity, equity, and inclusion training for public agencies and corporations, and hosts the annual Leadership Symposium and Diversity in Action awards. Residents seeking program support or educational resources can contact the Gary center directly.
