Wichita Pride, Inc.
Community SpotlightWichita, KS · Serving Greater Wichita and South-Central Kansas
Wichita Pride stands as the premier cultural convener and LGBTQ+ celebration organization in Kansas, bringing together tens of thousands of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and allied participants from across Greater Wichita and the Great Plains. The tradition of Pride in Wichita traces its roots to grassroots picnics and visibility rallies in the late 1980s. Following a period of hiatus in the late 1990s, community activists and Equality Kansas rallied in 2005 to re-establish the celebration in response to statewide civil rights setbacks. In 2007, the celebration spun off as an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, establishing an enduring civic institution that has now marked decades of continuous community organizing.
The centerpiece of the organization's annual calendar is the multi-day Wichita Pride Festival and Parade. Drawing community members, regional tourists, supportive civic leaders, and corporate allies, the festival transforms central public spaces into an open, affirming celebration of diversity. The vibrant downtown Pride parade moves down historic city avenues, featuring colorful marching units, community floats, student groups, and supportive faith congregations guided by volunteer parade marshals. At the festival grounds, attendees explore an expansive vendor marketplace featuring local artisans, nonprofit service providers, and affirming corporate partners, while mainstage performances highlight regional musicians, cultural speakers, and drag artists. The event also incorporates dedicated family zones with children's games, accessible viewing areas, food truck courts, and free on-site health screenings.
In addition to the flagship summer festival, Wichita Pride has expanded its footprint into a robust year-round schedule of civic and recreational gatherings. Each autumn, the organization hosts the Wichita Pride Unity March and Family Picnic, gathering participants at Wichita City Hall for an affirming march through downtown to Riverside Park, followed by a free community meal and outdoor games. The organization also coordinates popular recreational initiatives, including the annual Wichita Pride Kickball Tournament, which fosters camaraderie, athletic teamwork, and healthy socialization among community members in local public parks. Additionally, the committee hosts seasonal bowling mixers, drag showcases, and community educational forums in collaboration with local businesses and cultural venues.
The organization operates entirely through the commitment of an elected volunteer board of directors and hundreds of civic volunteers who meet monthly at The Center of Wichita on North Market Street. In addition to organizing events, the organization collaborates closely with regional equality organizations, student alliances at Wichita State University, and local public health coalitions to combat discrimination and promote inclusive municipal policies. Volunteers contribute hundreds of hours annually to coordinate event logistics, staff community hydration stations, assist entertainers, and ensure safe, welcoming spaces for all participants. Organizers maintain an extensive online presence, publish an annual Pride Guide, and offer transparent board meetings open to the public. Community members, corporate sponsors, and volunteers can register for parade participation or support ongoing celebrations through the official Wichita Pride website.
