Community Spotlight

Baltimore, MD · Serving Maryland

Serves LGBTQ+ individuals, youth, adults, elders, and families across Baltimore and MarylandLGBTQIA+Registered nonprofit

The Pride Center of Maryland is the premier statewide community organization dedicated to catalyzing, advocating, and providing holistic services for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer Marylanders. Founded in 1977 as the Gay and Lesbian Community Center of Baltimore, the organization has spent nearly five decades expanding civil rights, health equity, and social connection for sexual and gender minority communities throughout Baltimore and across the State of Maryland.

Headquartered in Baltimore, the center operates a comprehensive physical home offering essential health, wellness, and social support services. Clinical and health equity programs include free and confidential rapid HIV and STI screenings, pre-exposure prophylaxis navigation, harm reduction resources, and access to affirming mental health counselors. Staff members work closely with clients to address social determinants of health, providing warm referrals to medical providers, health insurance enrollment, and specialized substance use recovery networks across the region. Certified community health workers also conduct mobile outreach to meet vulnerable individuals where they are.

To address economic stability and emergency needs, the center maintains a walk-in basic needs pantry providing fresh food, nonperishable groceries, personal hygiene supplies, and gender-affirming clothing. Case managers offer one-on-one housing navigation, emergency stabilization, and rental assistance navigation for individuals experiencing homelessness or unstable living environments, ensuring that vulnerable community members have a secure foundation from which to build independent, fulfilling lives. Staff assist clients with identifying emergency shelters, finding stable permanent housing, and accessing public benefits programs throughout the metropolitan area.

Empowerment programs form another cornerstone of the center mission. The youth leadership academy provides affirming after-school environments, homework assistance, leadership workshops, and creative arts projects for young people. Adult and senior programs include dozens of weekly and monthly peer support circles, discussion groups, and social gatherings designed specifically for transgender women of color, bisexual individuals, LGBTQ+ elders, and parents of queer children. These groups provide emotional validation, shared resources, peer mentorship, and vital friendship networks in a supportive and welcoming atmosphere.

Beyond direct services, the Pride Center of Maryland organizes Baltimore Pride, one of the largest and most historic cultural celebrations in the Mid-Atlantic region. The annual multi-day festival, parade, and block party bring together tens of thousands of residents, community partners, and artists to honor LGBTQ+ resilience and visibility. The center also conducts cultural competency trainings, policy advocacy, and technical assistance for corporate partners, educational institutions, healthcare systems, and public agencies across Maryland to create safer communities statewide.

Individuals seeking assistance, testing services, or drop-in support can visit the Baltimore community center during open hours or connect through the online intake portal. Community members and allies can get involved by volunteering at community events, joining advisory committees, mentoring youth, or providing charitable contributions to ensure life-saving programs remain accessible to all across Maryland.
