BAGLY
Boston, MA · Serving Greater Boston and Massachusetts
BAGLY serves lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer youth and young adults ages 22 and under across Greater Boston and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Founded in 1980 by LGBTQ+ youth who recognized the urgent need for a space created and run by their peers, the organization is one of the oldest and most influential youth-led LGBTQ+ agencies in the United States. Operating from a modern, multi-use community center in downtown Boston, the organization provides a welcoming, accessible environment where young people build supportive friendships, access essential health resources, navigate systemic hurdles, and lead social justice movements.
At the core of the agency's mission is a youth-led, adult-supported model that places young people directly at the center of organizational decision-making. The Youth Leadership Committee and peer organizers guide program development, event planning, and community advocacy initiatives. BAGLY provides structured peer internships and leadership cohorts that prepare young people for careers in community organizing, public health, human services, and nonprofit administration. Through these programs, youth develop public speaking abilities, event management experience, and community outreach skills that foster lifelong personal confidence and professional growth.
The organization's clinical and wellness services address the physical and emotional health of LGBTQ+ youth through low-barrier, identity-affirming care. The Health and Wellness Center offers free, confidential individual mental health therapy, peer-led support groups, and healthcare navigation. In partnership with community healthcare providers, the center also provides walk-in HIV and STI testing, prevention supplies, safer sex materials, and harm reduction resources specifically tailored to adolescent and young adult populations. Licensed mental health clinicians provide trauma-informed support designed to help youth navigate identity development, family relationships, and school environments.
Basic needs stabilization forms another crucial component of the organization's work. The Community Center provides hot meals, laundry facilities, showers, clothing assistance, and direct case management for youth experiencing housing instability or homelessness. Resource navigators connect youth with affirming emergency shelters, transitional housing programs, educational completion programs, workforce training, and legal assistance. By addressing immediate survival needs, the center enables young people to focus on their long-term wellness and educational goals.
In addition to vital health and basic needs services, BAGLY organizes vibrant social and cultural programs that celebrate LGBTQ+ youth identity and foster joy. Signature traditions like the annual BAGLY Prom, open houses, artistic workshops, game nights, and discussion groups offer joyful spaces for self-expression and community building. These gatherings offer youth safe places to celebrate milestones with peers who share similar lived experiences and cultural backgrounds.
Beyond its physical center, BAGLY coordinates with community organizations, municipal agencies, and high school gender and sexuality alliances across Massachusetts. The organization advocates for inclusive public education policies, juvenile justice reform, and statewide resources for marginalized youth, ensuring that LGBTQ+ young people across the Commonwealth receive the comprehensive support, respect, and opportunities they deserve.
