Community Spotlight

Salem, MA · Serving North Shore of Massachusetts (including Salem, Lynn, Peabody, Beverly, and Cape Ann)

Serves LGBTQ+ youth and young adults ages 12 through 23, their families, and allies on the North Shore of MassachusettsLGBTQIA+Registered nonprofit

The North Shore Alliance of GLBTQ+ Youth, widely known as NAGLY, provides comprehensive community programs, peer support, and safe social spaces for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer youth and their allies across the North Shore of Massachusetts. Established in 1995 and operating from its dedicated community center in Salem, the organization is one of the oldest and largest suburban LGBTQ+ youth organizations in the country, serving young people ages 12 through 23 from dozens of surrounding North Shore and Cape Ann municipalities.

At the core of the organization's mission is its welcoming youth drop-in center, which offers an identity-affirming physical space where young people can gather, socialize, and connect with peers without fear of judgment or bullying. The center features recreational spaces, multimedia equipment, a lending library of queer literature, an affirming clothing boutique, and quiet areas for academic homework and creative projects. Trained youth development staff and adult mentors maintain a safe, supervised environment that encourages self-expression, personal agency, and emotional well-being.

Structured peer support groups form an essential component of weekly programming. Facilitated by experienced advisors, these groups address specific developmental and identity experiences, including dedicated circles for transgender and nonbinary youth, middle school students ages 12 through 14, queer youth of color, and neurodivergent LGBTQ+ individuals. NAGLY also hosts regular parent and caregiver support groups, offering families practical guidance, shared wisdom, and peer community as they support their children's journeys.

Beyond center walls, NAGLY actively engages the broader North Shore community through civic leadership, educational outreach, and celebratory cultural events. The organization coordinates the annual North Shore Youth Pride Prom, bringing together hundreds of teenagers from across the region for an unforgettable, inclusive evening. Its staff and youth leaders deliver educational workshops and cultural competency training for local school districts, healthcare providers, and civic organizations to create safer environments across the Commonwealth.

Through sustained community partnerships and volunteer engagement, NAGLY empowers the next generation of LGBTQ+ leaders to thrive in their schools, families, and hometowns. The organization collaborates with regional youth agencies to expand mental health resources, crisis support networks, and inclusive recreational opportunities for all young people. Dedicated volunteers and professional staff ensure that every visitor finds acceptance, understanding, and positive adult role models who encourage their personal growth. By fostering self-advocacy, artistic expression, community service, and civic leadership, NAGLY builds an inclusive environment for youth throughout Massachusetts. Through these comprehensive initiatives, the organization continues to serve as an enduring foundation of community, personal growth, empowerment, and belonging for youth across New England towns and cities. Youth seeking a welcoming community can visit the Salem center during open hours, while families, educators, and community members can access resources, volunteer as mentors, or contribute financial support online.
