The Urban League of Eastern Massachusetts enables adults in Eastern Massachusetts to overcome racial, social, and economic barriers to employment and career development through comprehensive workforce training, adult education, and civil rights advocacy. Founded in 1919 and headquartered in its historic building on Warren Street in Roxbury, the organization has served as a cornerstone institution for Black communities and underserved populations across Greater Boston for more than a century, championing social justice, civil rights protections, and economic self-determination.

The organization's core mission focuses on delivering market-driven workforce development training that equips job seekers with the practical skills and recognized credentials required for competitive, sustainable careers. Its signature programs include intensive computer literacy and administrative training, Microsoft Office certifications, digital workplace skills, and specialized customer service pathways. Students gain valuable hands-on experience in modern technology labs, supplemented by individualized resume development, mock interview practice, workplace etiquette coaching, professional networking, and interpersonal communication instruction that prepare graduates to thrive in corporate, government, and nonprofit workplace environments.

Recognizing that technical training must be paired with clear employment pathways, the Urban League maintains robust relationships with leading regional employers, financial institutions, technology firms, and healthcare systems. Dedicated career developers work directly with corporate hiring managers to coordinate on-site recruitment events, specialized corporate internships, job shadowing opportunities, and direct job placements that provide competitive wages, comprehensive healthcare benefits, and upward mobility for program graduates throughout Massachusetts.

Youth leadership and educational advancement represent additional cornerstones of the organization's regional programming. The Urban League provides after-school youth mentoring, STEM enrichment activities, college application preparation assistance, career exploration seminars, and financial literacy workshops for local high school students and young adults. In addition, the agency awards competitive academic scholarships each year to support promising students pursuing post-secondary education and vocational trade certifications.

Beyond vocational education, the Urban League delivers a wide array of specialized community support services that address systemic challenges facing urban families. Its specialized Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault program offers culturally competent crisis intervention, confidential safety planning, peer support groups, legal resource coordination, and emergency resource navigation for survivors. The agency also conducts health equity initiatives, community health screenings, financial capability seminars, and homeownership education workshops designed to build generational wealth, expand access to capital, and nurture family resilience throughout neighborhood communities.

Through its active auxiliaries, including the Urban League Guild and the Young Professionals Network, the organization cultivates multi-generational leadership and civic engagement. Volunteer members organize educational mentoring for youth, coordinate annual scholarship galas, lead community service drives, and facilitate grassroots voter registration and civic mobilization campaigns. Through steadfast advocacy, innovative career training, and comprehensive community empowerment, the Urban League of Eastern Massachusetts continues to dismantle economic inequities and expand opportunity across the Commonwealth.
